SIGNAL/NOISE

What if the most important signal in history had already arrived, and no one knew what it was trying to say?

In Santa Maria, Brazil, Henrique uses the Wow! signal recorded in 1977 to test ARGOS, a system built to find patterns in imperfect data. He expects an error. Instead, he finds a pattern that survives every attempt to dismiss it.

With Marina and Lara, the investigation crosses records, memories and events in Brazil. But correlation is not proof — and separating coincidence from evidence begins to exact a human cost.

On August 15, 1977, the Big Ear radio telescope recorded a radio signal so unusual that astronomer Jerry Ehman circled the printed sequence and wrote a single word beside it: “Wow!” Decades later, the episode remains one of the great enigmas of radio astronomy.

SIGNAL/NOISE takes that real event and moves it into an intimate story of investigation, loss, and obsession. Henrique, Marina and Lara follow traces that seem to link the old signal to events much closer to home than they should be. What begins as an attempt to separate coincidence from evidence starts to touch memories, absences and places where reality seems to have kept the marks of something no one managed to record in full.

The further the group goes, the less the question seems to be “who sent the Wow!” The problem becomes another one: what if humanity received something true, but read it all with the wrong tools? What if the difference between signal and noise also depends on who is listening?

The investigation leads the characters to a farm gate, a disappearance and an absence that does not behave like an ordinary absence. Rafael vanishes, but the emptiness he leaves behind does not end with him. The book closes its own story, yet leaves a fissure open: perhaps the universe is not silent. Perhaps we simply do not know how to recognize the shape of an answer.

Where the story is set

The novel moves between the concrete world of research, historical records and everyday life in Brazil, and a second layer that never fully leaves the real. The historical starting point is the Wow! signal of 1977, but the narrative does not depend on futuristic laboratories or great spaceships. The strange appears in ordinary places: a road, a house, documents, photographs, equipment, a farm gate.

This scale matters. The cosmos does not appear as a distant spectacle, but as something able to touch domestic life. The central feeling is that a gigantic question came in through a small crack.

Main characters

Henrique

One of the axes of the investigation. He is driven by the need to understand what the records do not explain, but he must face the fact that understanding a phenomenon and surviving it can be two different things.

Marina

Part of the human core of the investigation, she keeps the mystery from becoming only an intellectual puzzle. Her presence keeps the emotional cost of every discovery in view.

Lara

Takes part in the search for connections between the historical case and present events. She helps strain the border between hypothesis, evidence, and whatever simply does not fit the available model.

Rafael

His absence becomes a structural presence in the novel. The disappearance by the farm gate works not only as a mystery, but as a wound that keeps echoing elsewhere in the narrative universe.

Argos

A name that returns in the larger architecture of the project. In SIGNAL/NOISE, its role belongs to the reader’s first contact with patterns that only take on another reading when seen from afar.

The human conflict

At the center of SIGNAL/NOISE is not the question of extraterrestrials, but the human experience of chasing an answer that may never allow itself to be fully translated. The characters must decide how far to go when the investigation stops being mere curiosity and starts to demand people, relationships and certainties.

The philosophy behind the book

The philosophy of the book grows out of the difference between information and meaning. A signal can exist without our knowing what it means. A piece of evidence can be true and still support wrong interpretations. The novel examines the human need to turn silence into message and coincidence into narrative.

The central question is simple and uncomfortable: if something calls to us, does that mean it was made for us?

SIGNAL/NOISE also questions the anthropocentrism hidden in the search for intelligence beyond Earth. We expect words, mathematics, repetition, recognizable intent. But a truly different intelligence may not answer within the categories we use to define “answer.”

That is why the book does not treat uncertainty as a flaw. It is part of the experience. Knowledge advances, but it does not conquer everything. The mystery stays fair: there are facts, consequences, and traces, yet none of them gives the characters a comfortable explanation.

As a work of origin, SIGNAL/NOISE establishes the question that will accompany the Cosmological Chronicles: how much of reality exists beyond what we are able to record?

Symbols and motifs

The Wow! signal, the 6EQUJ5 sequence, the farm gate, incomplete records, noise, absence, photographs and the idea of waiting.

Tone

Science fiction of mystery, investigation and gradual strangeness. The extraordinary enters through concrete details and stays close to everyday life.
